Early Life

Anne-Sophie Mutter was born on June 29, 1963, in Rheinfelden, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She grew up in a family passionate about classical music, although no one played an instrument. At the age of five, she began her musical journey with piano lessons but soon switched to the violin after being inspired by a recording of Mendelssohn and Beethoven concertos. By six, she had already won the National Music Prize, and at just nine years old, she performed her first concert with the Musikkollegium Winterthur.

Career

Mutter's career took off in the late 1970s when she made her orchestral debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1977, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan, who became a significant mentor. She gained international acclaim in the 1980s, recording numerous albums, including the Brahms, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn violin concertos, primarily with Deutsche Grammophon. Over her illustrious career, she has received multiple awards, including four Grammy Awards and the prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize. Known for her dynamic and versatile playing style, her interpretations often spark debate among critics, with some praising her depth and others critiquing her idiosyncratic approach.

Personal Life

Mutter's personal life has seen its share of challenges and triumphs. She was married to Detlef Wunderlich, with whom she had two children, but he passed away from cancer in 1995. In 2002, she married renowned pianist and conductor André Previn, though they divorced in 2006. Despite their separation, they continued to collaborate musically. Currently residing in Munich, Mutter remains a prominent figure in classical music, continuing to inspire audiences worldwide with her artistry.
