Anoushka Shankar

Early Life

Anoushka Hemangini Shankar was born on June 9, 1981, in London, England, to a Tamil mother, Sukanya Rajan, and a Bengali father, the legendary sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Her childhood was split between London and Delhi, and she later moved to Encinitas, California, where she attended San Dieguito High School Academy. Anoushka graduated with honors in 1999 and was crowned homecoming queen, but she chose to pursue a career in music instead of attending college.

Career

Anoushka began her sitar training at the age of eight under one of her father's disciples, Gaurav Mazumdar. By the age of ten, she was accompanying her father on the tanpura during performances. Her public debut came at just 13 years old during her father's 75th birthday concert in New Delhi, where she performed alongside tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. She signed her first recording contract with Angel/EMI at 16 and released her debut album, "Anoushka," in 1998. Over the years, she has released several acclaimed albums, including "Rise," "Traveller," and "Land of Gold," and has collaborated with various artists across genres, showcasing her versatility as a musician.

Activism and Legacy

Beyond her music career, Anoushka is an active advocate for various social causes, including women's rights and refugee support. She participated in the One Billion Rising campaign in 2013 and has been involved with organizations like UNHCR and Help Refugees. Anoushka has received numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy nominations, and was named one of Time's 20 Asian Heroes in 2004. Her contributions to music and activism have made her a prominent figure in both fields, and she continues to inspire through her art and advocacy.
