Early Life and Education

Anthony Stewart Head was born on February 20, 1954, in Camden Town, London, into a family deeply rooted in the arts. His father, Seafield Laurence Stewart Murray Head, was a documentary filmmaker and a founder of Verity Films, while his mother, actress Helen Shingler, nurtured his artistic inclinations. Growing up alongside his older brother, actor and singer Murray Head, Anthony was inspired to pursue acting from a young age, recalling his early performance as the Emperor in "The Emperor's New Clothes" at just six years old. He was educated at Sunbury Grammar School and later honed his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

Career

Head's career began in the late 1970s, with his first notable role in the musical "Godspell" in 1978. He made his television debut that same year in the series "Enemy at the Door." Throughout the 1980s, he provided backing vocals for the band Red Box and appeared in various television sketches. However, it was his role in the iconic Nescafé Gold Blend commercials from 1987 to 1993 that catapulted him to fame. He is also well-known for his portrayal of Frank N. Furter in the West End revival of "The Rocky Horror Show," which he reprised multiple times. His most recognized role came in the late 1990s when he starred as Rupert Giles in the cult television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Personal Life

In 1982, Head met Sarah Fisher, an animal-welfare advocate, and they formed a long-lasting partnership, having two daughters, Emily and Daisy, both of whom followed in their parents' footsteps into acting. Although they never married, Head considered their bond equivalent to marriage. The couple lived on a picturesque 90-acre property in Somerset until Fisher's passing in December 2025. Tragically, Head himself passed away on June 1, 2026, from pneumonia complications, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by fans and co-stars alike, who remembered him as a brilliant actor and a beloved figure in television history.
