Aqua

Formation

Aqua, a Danish-Norwegian eurodance group, was formed in 1994 in Copenhagen by Søren Rasted, Claus Norreen, René Dif, and lead singer Lene Nystrøm. The group initially began as Joyspeed, producing music for a film soundtrack, but after a lackluster debut single, they rebranded as Aqua and signed with Universal Music Denmark in 1996. This change marked a pivotal moment in their career, allowing them to explore a more vibrant and catchy sound that would soon captivate audiences worldwide.

Breakthrough

Aqua achieved international fame with their 1997 hit single "Barbie Girl," which became a defining track of the late 90s. Their debut album, "Aquarium," released in the same year, featured several other successful singles, including "Roses Are Red" and "My Oh My." The group’s unique blend of pop and bubblegum music, characterized by infectious melodies and playful lyrics, resonated with fans, leading to the sale of approximately 33 million albums and singles, making them the most profitable Danish band ever.

Later Years and Disbandment

Following their initial success, Aqua released two more albums: "Aquarius" in 2000 and "Megalomania" in 2011. Despite their popularity, the group disbanded in 2001, only to reunite in 2007 for a series of performances and new music. However, Aqua officially disbanded again on May 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of catchy tunes and a significant impact on the Eurodance genre. Their playful style and memorable hits continue to influence pop music today.
