Formation

Arch Enemy is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1995 in Halmstad by guitarist Michael Amott and vocalist Johan Liiva, both of whom were previously members of the death metal band Carnage. The band quickly established itself in the metal scene, releasing their debut album, "Black Earth," in 1996, which was recorded in just nine days at Studio Fredman. This album laid the groundwork for their signature sound, blending aggressive riffs with melodic elements.

Breakthrough and Lineup Changes

In 1998, Arch Enemy signed with Century Media Records and released their second album, "Stigmata," which significantly increased their popularity in Europe and America. The lineup saw changes during this period, with the addition of bassist Sharlee D'Angelo and drummer Daniel Erlandsson. In 2000, Johan Liiva was replaced by Angela Gossow, marking a pivotal moment in the band's history. Gossow's powerful vocals debuted on the album "Wages of Sin" in 2001, further solidifying the band's status in the melodic death metal genre.

Continued Success

Under Gossow's leadership, Arch Enemy released several successful albums, including "Anthems of Rebellion" and "Doomsday Machine." In 2014, Gossow stepped down and was succeeded by Canadian vocalist Alissa White-Gluz. The band continued to thrive, releasing albums like "War Eternal" and "Will to Power." In 2026, Lauren Hart was announced as the new frontwoman, continuing the band's legacy of strong female vocalists. Arch Enemy remains a significant force in the metal scene, known for their intricate compositions and powerful performances.
