Arthur Tatum Jr., born on October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, was an American jazz pianist who would go on to be celebrated as one of the greatest musicians in jazz history. His mother, Mildred Hoskins, and father, Arthur Tatum Sr., moved from North Carolina to Toledo, where they raised their family in a conventional, church-going household. From a young age, Tatum faced challenges with his vision due to cataracts, which left him with limited sight after a series of operations. Despite these difficulties, he developed a remarkable musical talent, playing the piano by ear and demonstrating an exceptional memory and sense of pitch.

Career

Tatum's professional journey began in 1927 when he won an amateur competition and started performing on Toledo's WSPD radio station.
