Early Life

Nora Lum, known professionally as Awkwafina, was born in Stony Brook, New York, to a Chinese American father and a Korean American mother. Tragically, her mother passed away from pulmonary hypertension when Awkwafina was just four years old, leading her to be raised by her father and paternal grandparents. Growing up in Forest Hills, Queens, she attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, where she honed her musical talents by playing the trumpet and studying classical music and jazz. At the age of 15, she adopted the stage name Awkwafina, which she described as an alter ego that contrasted with her more reserved personality.

Career

Awkwafina began her music career at the age of 13, initially producing tracks with GarageBand before advancing to more sophisticated software like Logic Pro and Ableton. She gained significant attention in 2012 with her viral rap song "My Vag," which she wrote as a humorous response to another artist's work. Her debut album, "Yellow Ranger," was released in 2014, featuring tracks that showcased her unique style within the alternative hip-hop genre. In addition to her music, Awkwafina made her mark on television, appearing in the MTV series "Girl Code" and co-hosting its spin-off. She has also ventured into film, earning critical acclaim for her role in "The Farewell," which won her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
