Bananarama

Formation

Bananarama, an iconic English pop group, was formed in London in 1980 by childhood friends Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward, who had moved from Bristol. They met Siobhan Fahey while studying at the London College of Fashion. The trio, initially living in precarious conditions, took their name partly from the Roxy Music song "Pyjamarama". They quickly became involved in the punk and post-punk music scenes, performing backing vocals for various bands and recording their first demo, a cover of "Aie a Mwana" in 1981, which led to their first record deal.

Breakthrough

Bananarama's breakthrough came with their debut single, which became an underground hit, leading to a contract with Decca Records. Their unique blend of new wave and dance-pop, characterized by catchy melodies and vibrant performances, resonated with audiences. The group achieved significant success throughout the 1980s, with numerous chart entries, including 32 singles reaching the UK Top 50. In 1988, Jacquie O'Sullivan joined the group, replacing Siobhan Fahey, who left to form Shakespears Sister. This lineup change marked a new era for Bananarama, as they continued to release hit albums like "True Confessions" and "Wow!".

Legacy

Bananarama's influence on pop music is undeniable, as they hold the Guinness World Record for the highest number of chart entries by an all-female group. After O'Sullivan's departure in 1991, Dallin and Woodward continued as a duo, with a brief reunion with Fahey in 2017. Their enduring appeal is reflected in their extensive discography, which includes albums like "Deep Sea Skiving" and "The Greatest Hits Collection", solidifying their status as pop legends.
