Barry Bostwick

Early Life

Barry Knapp Bostwick was born on February 24, 1945, in San Mateo, California. He is the son of Elizabeth "Betty" (née Defendorf), a housewife, and Henry "Bud" Bostwick, a city planner and actor. Growing up, he faced the tragedy of losing his older brother, Henry "Pete" Bostwick, in a car accident at the young age of 32. Bostwick pursued his passion for acting at San Diego's United States International University, graduating in 1967, and later attended NYU's Graduate Acting Program, where he graduated in 1968.

Career

Bostwick's career began on the stage, where he was a member of the rock-theater commune First National Nothing, which released the album "If You Sit Real Still and Hold My Hand, You Will Hear Absolutely Nothing" in 1970. He also performed with a pop band called The Klowns, known for their clown-themed performances, and released a minor hit single, "Lady Love." Bostwick gained fame for originating the role of Danny Zuko in the Broadway production of "Grease," earning a Tony Award nomination. His most iconic role came in 1975 when he starred as Brad Majors in the cult classic film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." He won a Tony Award for his performance in the 1977 musical "The Robber Bridegroom" and later appeared in various television series, including the sitcom "Spin City."

Personal Life

Bostwick's personal life has seen its share of ups and downs. He was married to Stacey Nelkin from 1987 to 1991 and later married Sherri Ellen Jensen in 1993, with whom he has two children. In 1997, he faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, leading to surgery that year. His resilience was recognized in 2004 when he received the Gilda Radner Courage Award from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, highlighting his journey and advocacy for cancer awareness.
