Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco was born in Padua, in the Republic of Venice, on May 4, 1655. Little is known about his early life, and while there are tales suggesting he apprenticed under the renowned violin maker Nicolò Amati, evidence to support this claim is tenuous. A census record from 1680 mentions a "Christofaro Bartolomei" living in Amati's house, but discrepancies in age suggest this individual was not Cristofori.

Cristofori's career took a significant turn in 1688 when he was recruited by Prince Ferdinando de Medici, a prominent patron of music and the son of Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
