Belinda Carlisle

Early Life

Belinda Jo Carlisle was born on August 17, 1958, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. She was the first of seven siblings in a family that faced significant challenges, including her father's abandonment when she was just five years old. Growing up in a religious household, Carlisle's early life was marked by poverty, which she later reflected on, recalling having only a couple of outfits as a child. Despite these hardships, she developed a passion for music at a young age, influenced by artists like the Beach Boys and Cat Stevens.

Career

Carlisle's musical journey began in 1977 when she briefly played drums for the punk band the Germs under the name Dottie Danger. However, her most significant breakthrough came when she co-founded the Go-Go's, a band that would become one of the most successful American groups of the 1980s. As the lead vocalist, Carlisle helped usher in the new wave genre, and the band's unique sound combined punk energy with California surf music. Following the Go-Go's success, she launched a solo career, releasing several albums, including her self-titled debut "Belinda" in 1986 and the hit album "Heaven on Earth."

Personal Life

In her personal life, Carlisle has faced struggles with addiction, battling cocaine and alcohol abuse for over 30 years. She married Morgan Mason in 1986, with whom she has a son, James Duke Mason. The family has lived in various locations, including France and Thailand, and as of 2024, they reside in Mexico City. Despite her success, Carlisle has expressed feelings of guilt regarding her achievements in relation to her family, indicating a complex relationship with her upbringing and personal connections.
