Ben E. King

Early Life

Benjamin Earl King was born on September 28, 1938, in Henderson, North Carolina, and moved to Harlem, New York, at the age of nine. Growing up in a vibrant cultural environment, he began singing in church choirs and later formed a doo-wop group called the Four B's during high school, which occasionally performed at the famous Apollo Theater.

Career

King's professional music career took off in 1958 when he joined the doo-wop group the Five Crowns, which was soon rebranded as the Drifters. As a lead singer, he co-wrote and performed on several of the group's biggest hits, including "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," and the iconic "Save the Last Dance for Me." Despite only recording 13 songs with the Drifters, his contributions became foundational R&B standards. After leaving the Drifters due to contract disputes, King launched a successful solo career, producing timeless classics such as "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem."

Later Life and Legacy

In his later years, King was active in charitable work through the Stand By Me Foundation, which aimed to provide educational opportunities for youth. He continued to perform until 2014, despite health challenges, and left a lasting impact on music with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. King passed away on April 30, 2015, at the age of 76, leaving behind a rich legacy that influenced countless artists across various genres, solidifying his place in music history as a true icon.
