Bernard Haitink

Early Life

Bernard Johan Herman Haitink was born on March 4, 1929, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was the son of Willem Haitink, a civil servant, and Anna Clara Verschaffelt, who worked for Alliance française. Haitink's musical journey began with violin studies and conducting at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he was mentored by Felix Hupka. He played in orchestras before furthering his conducting education under Ferdinand Leitner in the mid-1950s.

Career

Haitink's conducting career took off when he led his first concert with the Netherlands Radio Union Orchestra on July 19, 1954. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming chief conductor by 1957. His debut with the prestigious Concertgebouw Orchestra occurred in 1956, and by 1961, he was named principal conductor, a role he held until 1988. Throughout his career, Haitink was known for his interpretations of classical symphonies and operas, recording extensively for labels like Philips and Decca. He conducted at The Proms in London, with his final performance there on September 3, 2019, alongside the Vienna Philharmonic.

Personal Life

Haitink's personal life included three marriages, the first to Marjolein Snijder, with whom he had five children. His later marriages were also to musicians, but both ended in divorce. In 1994, he married Patricia Bloomfield, a barrister and former viola player. Haitink passed away on October 21, 2021, at the age of 92 in London, leaving behind a rich legacy in classical music.
