Bill Irwin

Early Life

William Mills Irwin was born on April 11, 1950, in Santa Monica, California, to Elizabeth, a teacher, and Horace G. Irwin, an aerospace engineer. He pursued his passion for the arts at the California Institute of the Arts from 1970 to 1972, later transferring to Oberlin College, where he graduated in 1974. Following his education, Irwin attended the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, which set the stage for his unique career in performance art. In 1975, he co-founded the Pickle Family Circus in San Francisco, marking the beginning of his journey as a clown and performer.

Career

Irwin's career is marked by his innovative contributions to theater and performance art. He is known for creating several acclaimed stage shows that blend clowning with theatrical elements, including "The Regard of Flight" and "Fool Moon." His Broadway debut came with the production of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor. Irwin also gained fame as Mr. Noodle on the beloved children's show "Sesame Street" and has made numerous appearances on television, including roles in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." His work has earned him multiple accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Fellowship.

Bill Irwin is married to Martha Roth, an actress-turned-nurse midwife, whom he met while seeking treatment for a stiff neck. The couple has an adopted son, Santos Patrick Morales Irwin, born on December 9, 1991. Irwin's personal experiences and family life have influenced his artistic endeavors, enriching his performances with depth and authenticity.
