Blanche of Castile

Early Life

Blanche of Castile was born in Palencia, Spain, in 1188, as the third daughter of Alfonso VIII, King of Castile, and Eleanor of England, who was the sister of notable English kings Richard I and John. Her upbringing was marked by royal expectations, and she frequently visited the Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas, a significant institution founded by her parents. In a twist of fate, her grandmother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, recognized Blanche's potential to fulfill the role of queen consort after meeting her and her sister Urraca. Consequently, in the spring of 1200, Eleanor brought Blanche to France to marry Louis VIII.

Queen Consort and Regent

Blanche married Louis VIII and became Queen of France, a position she held from 1188 until her death in 1252. Her reign was characterized by her strong political influence, particularly during her son Louis IX's minority, when she served as regent from 1226 to 1234. She demonstrated remarkable leadership during her son's absence from 1248 until 1252, navigating the complexities of governance and maintaining stability in the kingdom. Her devout Catholic faith also played a significant role in her life and decisions as queen.
