Robert William Hoskins was born on October 26, 1942, in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. He was the son of Elsie, a cook and nursery school teacher, and Robert Hoskins, a bookkeeper and lorry driver. Raised in the Finsbury Park area of London from the age of two weeks, Hoskins faced challenges early on, being labeled as "stupid" due to his dyslexia. He left school at 15 with only one O-Level and took on various jobs, including porter, lorry driver, and plumber, before embarking on a journey that included time spent on a kibbutz in Israel and caring for camels in Syria.

Career

Hoskins's acting career began in 1968 at the Victoria Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, where he made his stage debut in a production of "Romeo and Juliet." His breakthrough came in 1978 with the BBC Television serial "Pennies from Heaven," leading to a series of acclaimed roles in films such as "The Long Good Friday" (1980), "Mona Lisa" (1986), and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988). Known for his intense portrayals of tough characters, Hoskins also showcased his versatility in various genres, earning numerous accolades, including a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Personal Life

Hoskins was married twice, first to Jane Livesey, with whom he had two children, and later to Linda Banwell, with whom he had two more children. He lived between Hampstead, London, and Chiddingly, East Sussex. Later in life, he chose to give up alcohol, influenced by his wife. Hoskins was known for his candid views, notably expressing disdain for Tony Blair, whom he believed had caused significant damage to the country. He humorously noted that actor Danny DeVito would play him in a film about his life, highlighting his self-deprecating nature.
