Formation

Boston is an American rock band formed in 1975 in Boston, Massachusetts, by chief songwriter and composer Tom Scholz. The band's origins trace back to Scholz's time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he began writing music and formed the band Freehold with guitarist Barry Goudreau and drummer Jim Masdea. Vocalist Brad Delp joined the group in 1970, and after several lineup changes and the disbandment of a previous project called Mother's Milk, Scholz and Delp worked on demo tapes that would eventually lead to the formation of Boston.

Breakthrough

The band's self-titled debut album, "Boston," was released in 1976 and became a massive success, featuring hits like "More Than a Feeling" and "Peace of Mind." The lineup during this period included original members Tom Scholz, Brad Delp, Barry Goudreau, and Jim Masdea, along with drummer Sib Hashian and bassist Fran Sheehan. Following the success of their debut, Boston released their second album, "Don't Look Back," in 1978, which solidified their status in the rock scene. The band continued to evolve, with various members joining and leaving over the years, including Gary Pihl and Fran Cosmo.

Legacy

Despite facing challenges, including the tragic suicide of lead vocalist Brad Delp in 2007, Boston has continued to perform and release music. The band's innovative sound, characterized by complex guitar harmonies and powerful vocals, has influenced many artists in the hard rock genre. With a career spanning several decades, Boston remains a significant figure in American rock music, known for their arena rock style and enduring hits.
