Early Life

Boy George, born George Alan O'Dowd on June 14, 1961, in Barnehurst Hospital, Kent, England, was raised in a working-class Irish Catholic family in Eltham. He is the second of five children born to Jerry and Dinah O'Dowd. His family history is marked by hardship, including an abusive father and a tragic lineage that includes a great uncle executed during the Irish War of Independence. Boy George's upbringing influenced his artistic expression, which often reflects themes of struggle and identity.

Career

Boy George's career took off in the early 1980s when he became the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club, formed in 1981. The band's androgynous style and catchy hits, such as "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Time," made them international stars. Culture Club was notable for being the first group since The Beatles to have three Top 10 hits in the US from a debut album. Boy George also pursued a solo career and was the frontman for the band Jesus Loves You, showcasing his versatility across genres like pop, new wave, and disco.
