Brian Molko

Early Life

Brian Molko was born on December 10, 1972, in Brussels, Belgium, to an American father of French and Italian descent and a Scottish mother. His family moved frequently due to his father's banking career, living in various places including Dundee, Scotland, Liberia, Lebanon, and finally settling in Sandweiler, Luxembourg. Growing up in a strict household that discouraged artistic expression, Molko rebelled by adopting an androgynous style, complete with nail polish and eyeliner, and immersing himself in punk music. He faced bullying at the European School of Luxembourg, leading him to complete his education at the American International School of Luxembourg before pursuing drama at Goldsmiths College in London.

Career

Molko's music career took off when he co-founded the band Placebo with Stefan Olsdal, whom he met by chance in London. The band gained recognition for their unique sound, characterized by Molko's nasal voice and aggressive guitar style. They became known for their eclectic mix of genres, including rock, alternative rock, and glam punk. Placebo's notable performances include their role in the film "Velvet Goldmine," where they performed T. Rex's "20th Century Boy." Molko's songwriting has been influential, with a selection of his lyrics published in a book titled "Selected" in 2014, with a second edition set for release in 2024.

Personal Life

Brian Molko identifies as bisexual, a theme reflected in his lyrics. He has a son, Cody, born in 2005, who is now an actor. Molko has been candid about his struggles with mental health and substance use, admitting to using various drugs, including heroin, before achieving sobriety after the release of Placebo's album "Meds." He is bilingual in French and English and has received recognition for his contributions to the arts, including an Honorary Fellowship from Goldsmiths College in 2012. In recent years, he has been involved in social commentary, notably facing legal challenges after criticizing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a performance in 2023.
