Early Life

Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives was born on June 14, 1909, in Hunt City, Illinois, to Levi "Frank" Ives and Cordelia "Dellie" White. Growing up in a family of seven children, Ives discovered his passion for music early on, performing folk ballads like "Barbara Allen" at local events. He graduated from Newton High School in 1927 and briefly attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College, where he played football. However, Ives left college after a memorable incident during an English lecture, later becoming a notable figure in the DeMolay Hall of Fame and achieving the 33rd degree in Scottish Rite Freemasonry.

Music Career

Ives began his music career in the early 1930s, traveling across the United States as an itinerant singer. He gained popularity through radio shows and Broadway performances, notably starring in "The Boys from Syracuse" and later in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." His folk music repertoire included classics like "Foggy Dew" and "Big Rock Candy Mountain," and he was associated with the Almanacs, a folk-singing group that included legends like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Ives's radio show, "The Wayfaring Stranger," helped solidify his status as a folk music icon.

Legacy

Throughout his life, Ives received numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. He was also honored with the Order of Lincoln, Illinois's highest award, for his contributions to the performing arts. Ives's autobiography, "The Wayfaring Stranger," and his long-standing relationship with the Boy Scouts of America further highlight his impact on American culture. He passed away on April 14, 1995, leaving behind a rich legacy in music and acting.
