Early Life

Burna Boy, born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, grew up in a musically inclined family. His mother, Bose Ogulu, was a language translator and later became his manager, while his father, Samuel Ogulu, managed a welding company. His maternal grandfather, Benson Idonije, was known for managing the legendary Fela Kuti. Burna Boy's early exposure to music led him to create his own beats using FL Studio, and he attended Corona Secondary School before moving to London for further studies. He studied media technology at the University of Sussex and media communications and culture at Oxford Brookes University, returning to Nigeria to pursue a music career.

Career

Burna Boy's music career took off in 2012 with the release of his debut single "Like to Party," which set the stage for his first studio album, L.I.F.E (2013). The album was a commercial success, selling 40,000 copies on its release day. He later signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group, releasing his major label debut, Outside, in 2018. His discography includes critically acclaimed albums such as African Giant and Twice as Tall, which have solidified his status as a leading figure in Afrobeats. Known for his unique blend of genres, including Afrobeat, dancehall, and reggae, Burna Boy's music often addresses political themes and resonates with a global audience.

Personal Life

Burna Boy's personal life has garnered media attention, particularly his relationships. He dated British rapper Stefflon Don from 2018 to 2022 and was later linked to American singer Chloe Bailey. In 2025, he made headlines for converting from Christianity to Islam, describing it as part of his spiritual exploration. A passionate football fan, he supports Manchester United and admires former Nigerian player Jay-Jay Okocha. Burna Boy's influence extends beyond music; he has been recognized as a fashion icon and a cultural ambassador for Africa, inspiring a new generation of artists.
