Biography
Early Life
Winston Rodney, known by his stage name Burning Spear, was born in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica. Growing up, he was influenced by the sounds of R&B, soul, and jazz from US radio stations, with Curtis Mayfield and James Brown being significant inspirations. His political views were shaped by the activist Marcus Garvey, particularly regarding Pan-Africanism and self-determination. In 1969, he sought advice from Bob Marley, who encouraged him to approach Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label.
Career
Burning Spear initially started as a group, named after a military honor given to Jomo Kenyatta, and included bass singer Rupert Willington. They recorded their debut single "Door Peep" in 1969, followed by several more singles and two albums before leaving Studio One in 1974 due to disillusionment with the label. After a brief hiatus working as a farmer, he returned to music in 1975, collaborating with Jack Ruby and the backing band The Black Disciples. Their single "Marcus Garvey" became a hit, leading to the successful album of the same name. This success prompted a deal with Island Records, although creative differences led Rodney to establish his own label, Burning Music, to maintain artistic control.
Awards and Legacy
Burning Spear has received significant recognition in the music industry, winning two Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album for "Calling Rastafari" in 2000 and "Jah Is Real" in 2009. He has been nominated for a total of 12 Grammy Awards, showcasing his enduring impact on the reggae genre. His music continues to resonate with themes of social justice and cultural pride, solidifying his status as one of the most influential roots reggae artists since the 1970s.
