B’z

Formation

B'z, a renowned Japanese rock duo, was formed in 1988 by guitarist Takahiro "Tak" Matsumoto and vocalist Koshi Inaba. Matsumoto, who had been active in the music scene, sought to create a band and discovered Inaba through a demo tape. Their first session together featured covers of The Beatles, and they quickly decided to maintain a two-member format, believing that the guitar and human voice could express emotions that digital sounds could not. They debuted on September 21, 1988, with their self-titled album "B'z" and the single "Dakara Sono Te o Hanashite".

Breakthrough and Evolution

B'z gained popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, releasing a series of successful albums, including "OFF THE LOCK" and "BREAK THROUGH". Their music evolved from an experimental sound incorporating synthesizers to a more defined hard rock style. Over the years, they have released numerous albums, such as "RISKY", "IN THE LIFE", and "RUN", showcasing their versatility across genres like pop rock and blues. Their commitment to quality music led them to wait until they had enough material before performing live, a strategy that paid off as they built a strong fanbase.

Legacy and Influence

B'z is celebrated as one of the best-selling music acts in Japan, with over 100 million records sold worldwide. They hold numerous records, including 50 consecutive No. 1 singles and 27 No. 1 albums on the Oricon charts. Their influence extends beyond Japan, as they were the first Asian act to have their handprints on Hollywood's RockWalk. Matsumoto's guitar work has inspired a generation of musicians, and B'z continues to be a significant force in the music industry, regularly ranking among the most popular artists in Japan.
