Candlemass

Formation and Early Years

Candlemass, a Swedish doom metal band, was formed in 1984 in Upplands Väsby by bassist Leif Edling and drummer Matz Ekström, alongside guitarist Mats Björkman and vocalist Johan Längqvist. Their debut album, *Epicus Doomicus Metallicus*, released in 1986, is credited with defining the epic doom metal genre, which took its name from this landmark record. Following the album's success, Längqvist was replaced by Messiah Marcolin, and the band continued to evolve with the release of *Nightfall* in 1987, which saw new members Lars Johansson and Jan Lindh join the lineup after the departure of Bergwall and Ekström.

Lineup Changes and Continued Success

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Candlemass released several influential albums, including *Ancient Dreams* (1988) and *Tales of Creation* (1989). However, internal disputes led to Marcolin's departure in 1991, after which the band briefly disbanded. They returned in 1992 with vocalist Thomas Vikström for *Chapter VI*, but the album's commercial failure led to another hiatus. Candlemass reunited with Marcolin in 2002, marking a significant return to form with new releases until 2006.

Recent Years and Legacy

After a series of lineup changes, including the addition of Robert Lowe and Mats Levén as vocalists, Candlemass has continued to release music, with their latest album, *Sweet Evil Sun*, showcasing their enduring influence in the doom metal genre. Recognized as one of the "big four" of doom metal alongside Pentagram, Saint Vitus, and Trouble, Candlemass has played a pivotal role in shaping the sound and style of modern doom metal, drawing inspiration from classic bands like Black Sabbath and evolving their sound over the decades.
