Formation

Cannibal Corpse was formed in December 1988 in Buffalo, New York, by members of two disbanded local death metal bands: Beyond Death and Tirant Sin. The original lineup consisted of bassist Alex Webster, guitarist Jack Owen, drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz, lead vocalist Chris Barnes, and guitarist Bob Rusay. The band quickly gained traction in the local scene, playing their first show at Buffalo's River Rock Cafe in March 1989 and releasing a self-titled demo tape known as "A Skull Full of Maggots." They signed with Metal Blade Records in July 1989, marking the beginning of their professional career.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

Cannibal Corpse's debut album, "Eaten Back to Life," was released in 1990, followed by several influential albums including "Butchered at Birth," "Tomb of the Mutilated," and "The Bleeding." Over the years, the band has seen several lineup changes. Bob Rusay left in 1993, and Chris Barnes departed in 1995, with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher taking over as lead vocalist. Jack Owen left in 2004, while Pat O’Brien joined in 1997 and remained until 2020. Erik Rutan joined the band in 2020, solidifying the current lineup alongside Webster and Mazurkiewicz.

Legacy and Influence

Cannibal Corpse is widely regarded as one of the most influential death metal bands, often referred to as the "kings of death metal." Their graphic lyrics and aggressive sound have inspired countless bands in the genre, leading to the term "Cannibal Clones" for those who emulate their style. In 2023, they were voted the "most brutal band of all time" by readers of Revolver, cementing their status in the metal community. Their music continues to resonate with fans, showcasing a consistent style that has evolved while remaining true to their roots.
