Formation

Carcass, a British grindcore and technical death metal band, was formed in Liverpool in 1985 by guitarist Bill Steer and drummer Ken Owen. Initially starting as a school band, they quickly evolved into a more serious project. After a brief stint with the D-beat band Disattack, which included Steer, the group changed its name to Carcass and welcomed bassist-vocalist Jeff Walker in 1986. The band's early lineup also featured vocalist Sanjiv, who left shortly after their first demo.

Breakthrough and Key Releases

Carcass gained recognition with their debut album, "Reek of Putrefaction," released in 1988, which showcased their unique blend of grindcore and death metal. The album's raw production and morbid themes caught the attention of influential DJ John Peel, leading to their first Peel Session in 1989. Over the years, Carcass released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Symphonies of Sickness" (1989), "Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious" (1991), and the melodic death metal landmark "Heartwork" (1993). Despite disbanding in 1996, the band reunited in 2007, continuing to release new material, including "Surgical Steel" (2013) and "Torn Arteries" (2021).

Legacy

Carcass is widely regarded as a pioneer of the grindcore and melodic death metal genres, influencing countless bands with their innovative sound and gruesome lyrical themes. Their early work, often described as "splatter death metal," set a precedent for the goregrind subgenre, while their later albums incorporated progressive elements, solidifying their status in the metal community. With only a few constant members, including Steer and Walker, Carcass has navigated numerous lineup changes while maintaining their distinct musical identity.
