Early Life

Kemal Amin "Casey" Kasem was born on April 27, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, to Lebanese Druze parents, Helen and Amin Kasem. His father immigrated from Lebanon, and his mother was born to a Lebanese family in Pennsylvania. Growing up, his parents emphasized assimilation into American culture, which included not speaking Arabic at home. Inspired by the radio show "Make Believe Ballroom," Kasem pursued a career in radio, starting at Northwestern High School and later attending Wayne State University. His military service in the Korean War as a disc jockey on the American Forces Korea Network further solidified his passion for broadcasting.

Career

After returning from the war, Kasem began his professional career in Flint, Michigan, before moving to Detroit, where he hosted children's television shows. He later transitioned to radio, adopting the persona "Casey at the Mike" and quickly gaining popularity in Cleveland. Kasem became a household name as the creator and host of the iconic radio countdown program "American Top 40" and the television series "America's Top 10." He also lent his voice to beloved characters, including Shaggy Rogers in the "Scooby-Doo" franchise and Robin in "Super Friends."

Personal Life and Activism

Kasem was a dedicated vegan and an advocate for animal rights and environmental causes. He was politically active, supporting Lebanese-American and Arab-American issues, and was critical of factory farming. His activism included campaigning against the Gulf War and advocating for Palestinian independence. Kasem's commitment to social justice was evident in his work, including a relief project for earthquake victims in Armenia. He was honored with the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing his contributions to entertainment and society. Kasem passed away on June 15, 2014, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and creativity.
