Caterina Valente

Early Life

Caterina Germaine Maria Valente was born on January 14, 1931, in Paris to Italian musician parents, Giuseppe Valente and Maria Siri. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in show business, with a lineage of performers spanning seven generations, she was exposed to music and performance from an early age. Her first love was jazz, influenced by legends like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday, which ignited her passion for singing. By the age of five, she was determined to become a singer after being moved to tears by Holiday's music. Valente began her career in 1936 at the Friedrichsbau theatre in Stuttgart, performing alongside her family in a sextet.

Career

As World War II disrupted her early career, Valente and her family toured Switzerland and later Germany, where they had to adapt to the harsh realities of war. After the war, she returned to France, working as a freelance singer in clubs and performing chansons. Her big break came when she was encouraged to perform a singing number by Grock, a clown from the circus where her husband worked. Over the years, Valente became a multilingual sensation, singing in thirteen languages and collaborating with iconic artists like Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald. Her discography includes notable albums such as "A Date With Caterina Valente" and "Olé Caterina."

Legacy

Caterina Valente's contributions to music have been recognized with numerous awards, including a Grammy nomination in 1959 and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1986. She received multiple lifetime achievement awards, including the Echo Music Prize in 2002 and an Honorary Bambi in 2005. Valente's influence as a singer, guitarist, and dancer continues to resonate, marking her as a beloved figure in the music world until her passing in September 2024.
