Early Life

Christopher John Davison, known professionally as Chris de Burgh, was born on October 15, 1948, in Venado Tuerto, Argentina, to Colonel Charles John Davison, a British diplomat, and Maeve Emily de Burgh. He spent his formative years in various countries, including Malta, Nigeria, and the Belgian Congo, due to his father's diplomatic career. The family eventually settled in Bargy Castle, County Wexford, Ireland, where Chris began singing for hotel guests. He attended Marlborough College in England and later studied English and French at Trinity College Dublin.

Musical Career

De Burgh signed his first contract with A&M Records in 1974, releasing his debut album, "Far Beyond These Castle Walls," which did not chart but began to build his fan base. His second album, "Spanish Train and Other Stories," featured the hit single "A Spaceman Came Travelling," which became a Christmas favorite. Throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s, de Burgh's music evolved from art rock to more pop-oriented material, achieving significant success in countries like Norway and Brazil. His 1986 love ballad "The Lady in Red" became a worldwide hit, solidifying his status as a prominent singer-songwriter. Over his career, he has sold over 45 million albums globally.

Chris de Burgh has been married to Diane since 1977, and they have three children, including Rosanna, who won the Miss World title in 2003. Despite facing personal challenges, including a public affair in 1994, he reconciled with his wife. De Burgh has a passion for war history, which influences his songwriting, and he has expressed a belief in spiritual healing. His interests also extend to classical music, and he has a notable collection of vintage wines, which sold for over $500,000 in 2011.
