Chrissie Hynde

Early Life

Chrissie Hynde, born Christine Ellen Hynde on September 7, 1951, in Akron, Ohio, grew up in nearby Cuyahoga Falls. The daughter of a part-time secretary and a Yellow Pages manager, she had little interest in high school, stating she never attended dances or dates. Instead, her passion for music blossomed as she frequently traveled to Cleveland to see bands, developing a fascination with musicians like Brian Jones and Iggy Pop.

Career

Hynde's musical journey began in earnest during her time at Kent State University, where she joined a band called Sat. Sun. Mat. After moving to London in 1973, she worked in various jobs, including a stint at the music magazine NME. She eventually formed the Pretenders, where she became the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter. The band is known for hits like "Stop Your Sobbing" and "Brass in Pocket," and Hynde has remained the only original member throughout the band's history. Her artistry is characterized by a contralto vocal range and a distinctive style that has influenced many artists, including Madonna.

Personal Life

Hynde has dual citizenship in the US and the UK. She has had notable relationships, including one with Ray Davies of The Kinks, with whom she shares a daughter, Natalie. She was also married to Jim Kerr of Simple Minds and Colombian artist Lucho Brieva. A committed vegetarian since 1969, Hynde follows Vaishnavism and travels to India annually for spiritual studies. Currently, she resides in London but maintains ties to her hometown of Akron, Ohio.
