Christopher Cross

Early Life

Christopher Charles Geppert, known professionally as Christopher Cross, was born on May 3, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas. Growing up as a self-described "army brat," he was the son of a U.S. Army pediatrician who served at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Cross attended Alamo Heights High School, where he graduated in 1969, participating in football and track and field while being raised in a Catholic environment.

Career

Cross developed a passion for music early on, influenced by artists like Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. He began his musical journey as a drummer in a band called the Psychos during middle school, later shifting to guitar to enhance his songwriting. In high school, he formed a band with friends, which eventually evolved into Christopher Cross. The band moved to Austin, Texas, where they recorded demos and played covers. In 1979, Warner Bros. signed Cross as a solo artist, leading to the release of his eponymous debut album, which won five Grammy Awards. His hit singles, including "Sailing" and "Arthur's Theme," topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, solidifying his place in music history.

Personal Life

Cross was married to Roseanne Harrison from 1973 to 1982, with whom he had a son, Justin. He later married Jan Bunch from 1988 to 2007, having two daughters, Madison and Rain. In April 2020, Cross announced he had tested positive for COVID-19, which led to complications including Guillain–Barré syndrome. Despite these challenges, he made a remarkable recovery and celebrated his 40th anniversary with a concert tour in 2021 and 2022.
