Chuck McCann

Early Life

Charles John Thomas McCann was born on September 2, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the son of Valentine J. McCann, whose father had performed in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, and Viola Hennessy. McCann's artistic journey began at a remarkably young age; he started doing radio voiceovers at just six years old. By the age of twelve, he had founded a fan club for the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy and was already impressing audiences with his impressions of Oliver Hardy.

Career

Chuck McCann's career spanned over 70 years, during which he became a beloved figure in children's television programming and animation. He gained prominence by hosting various comedy and variety puppet shows in the New York area, including The Chuck McCann Show, which showcased his talent for engaging young audiences. His big break came when he performed on The Sandy Becker Show, stepping in for the original host. McCann was also featured in the best-selling LP record album The First Family, which humorously lampooned President John F. Kennedy and his family. In addition to his television work, he recorded comedy parody albums and was known for his voice acting.

Personal Life

In his personal life, McCann married Suzanne Conner in 1958, with whom he had a son, but they divorced in 1966. He later married model Eileen Somerstrad, with whom he had two daughters, but this marriage ended in 1977. He found lasting companionship with his agent, Betty Fanning, whom he married and remained with until his death in 2018. McCann was also known for his close friendship with Hugh Hefner and was a regular at the Playboy Mansion, reflecting his vibrant personality and connections in the entertainment industry.
