Control Machete

Formation

Control Machete is a Mexican hip-hop group formed in 1996 in Monterrey, Nuevo León. The group quickly became a prominent figure in the Avanzada Regia musical movement, which was pivotal in shaping the Latin hip-hop scene. Their debut album, "Mucho Barato," released the same year, is considered a seminal work in Spanish-language hip-hop, selling over 100,000 copies in Mexico within its first weeks and eventually exceeding 500,000 units across Latin America.

Breakthrough

The lead single from their debut album, "¿Comprendes Mendes?," gained massive airplay on MTV Latin America, earning the group a nomination for an MTV Video Music Award for International Viewer's Choice in 1997. Following this success, Control Machete collaborated with various artists, including Cypress Hill and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Their second album, "Artilleria Pesada, Presenta..." released in 1999, further solidified their international presence and was nominated for Best Urban Music Album at the 1st Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2000. The group gained mainstream recognition when their song "Sí Señor" was featured in a Levi's Super Bowl commercial.

Lineup Changes and Legacy

Fermín IV, one of the founding members, left Control Machete in 2002 to pursue a solo career, releasing the album "Boomerang" and collaborating with Cypress Hill. Despite this change, Control Machete's influence on the Latin hip-hop genre remains significant, with their music continuing to resonate with fans and inspire new artists in the genre.
