Formation

Darkthrone, a prominent Norwegian black metal band, was formed in 1986 in Kolbotn, Akershus. Initially known as Black Death, the group started as a death metal band featuring members Gylve Nagell (Fenriz), Ivar Enger, and Anders Risberget. Their early influences included iconic bands such as Autopsy, Venom, and Celtic Frost. In late 1987, they adopted the name Darkthrone and welcomed Dag Nilsen as a new member. The lineup saw further changes in 1988 when Ted Skjellum (Nocturno Culto) replaced Risberget, solidifying the duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto that would define the band’s future.

Transition to Black Metal

In the early 1990s, Darkthrone transitioned from death metal to a black metal style, heavily influenced by the likes of Bathory and Celtic Frost. This shift was marked by the release of their debut studio album, "Soulside Journey," in 1990, which, while primarily a death metal record, hinted at their evolving sound. The band continued to release a series of influential albums, including "A Blaze in the Northern Sky," "Under a Funeral Moon," and "Transilvanian Hunger," which solidified their status in the Norwegian black metal scene.

Legacy and Influence

Darkthrone has released 22 studio albums to date, with their music characterized by a raw, underground aesthetic. Despite their significant impact on the black metal genre, the band has chosen to remain outside the mainstream music scene and does not perform live. The duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto has been instrumental in shaping the sound and ethos of black metal, making Darkthrone a legendary name in heavy metal history.
