Formation

Dead Can Dance was formed in Melbourne, Australia, in August 1981 by Brendan Perry, Paul Erikson, and Simon Monroe. The group initially started as a trio but soon expanded to include Lisa Gerrard, who became a key member on vocals and percussion. The band quickly gained recognition in Melbourne's post-punk scene, headlining at the Crystal Ballroom and releasing their first official recording, a home demo of "Fatal Impact," in December 1981. After a farewell show in May 1982, they relocated to London, where they signed with the independent label 4AD.

Breakthrough

Their self-titled debut album, "Dead Can Dance," was released in February 1984, showcasing a unique blend of ambient guitar music, chanting, and a gothic aesthetic. This album set the stage for their subsequent releases, including the influential "Spleen and Ideal" in 1985, which marked their shift towards a neoclassical darkwave style. Over the years, the band released several critically acclaimed albums, such as "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun," "The Serpent’s Egg," and "Into the Labyrinth," each incorporating diverse musical influences ranging from medieval European music to world music elements.
