Early Life

Dexter Keith Gordon was born on February 27, 1923, in Los Angeles, California, into a family with a rich legacy. His father, Dr. Frank Gordon, was one of the first African-American medical doctors in Los Angeles, while his mother, Gwendolyn Baker, was the granddaughter of Captain Edward Lee Baker Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient. Gordon began his musical journey at the age of 13 with the clarinet, transitioning to the alto saxophone at 15, and finally settling on the tenor saxophone at 17. He honed his skills under the guidance of Lloyd Reese and played alongside contemporaries like Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette.

Career

Gordon's professional career took off in the 1940s when he joined Lionel Hampton's band, where he played alongside notable musicians such as Illinois Jacquet. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he became a prominent figure in the bebop scene, recording with legends like Dizzy Gillespie and leading his own sessions for the Savoy label. His unique style and towering presence earned him nicknames like "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant." Over his 40-year career, he released numerous acclaimed albums, including "Daddy Plays the Horn," "Go," and "Sophisticated Giant," solidifying his status as a jazz icon.

Personal Life

Gordon's personal life was as vibrant as his music. He was married three times and had six children: Robin, James, Deirdre, Mikael, Morten, and Benjamin. His connections extended beyond music; while living in Denmark, he became the godfather of Lars Ulrich, the future drummer of Metallica. Gordon's legacy continues to influence jazz musicians today, and he was honored with several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance and the NEA Jazz Masters award before his passing on April 25, 1990.
