Dieterich Buxtehude, originally named Diderich Buxtehude, was born in 1637 in Helsingborg, a city in the province of Scania, which was part of Denmark at the time. His father, Johannes Buxtehude, served as the organist at St. Olaf's Church in Helsingør and St. Mary's Church in Helsingborg.
