Dominic Howard

Early Life

Dominic James Howard was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, where he was raised in a family with a tailoring background. At the age of eight, his family relocated to Teignmouth, Devon, a move that would later influence his musical journey. Howard's passion for music ignited when he began playing drums at around twelve years old, inspired by a jazz band that performed at his school.

Career

Howard's musical career took off when he met guitarist Matt Bellamy while their respective bands rehearsed in the same building. Together, they recruited bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and the trio formed a band initially named Rocket Baby Dolls, which was later renamed Muse in 1994. Under Howard's drumming, Muse achieved remarkable success, winning numerous awards and selling over 20 million albums worldwide. Known for his unique left-handed drumming style, Howard has also played in the supergroup Vicky Cryer and participated in the covers band the Jaded Hearts Club alongside Bellamy, featuring a guest appearance from Paul McCartney. His drumming has garnered admiration, with Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy citing Howard as an influence due to his powerful and groovy style.

Personal Life

Tragedy struck in 2004 when Howard's father, William, passed away from a heart attack shortly after attending Muse's performance at the Glastonbury Festival. Despite this loss, Howard continued to thrive in his career, and in 2008, he, along with his bandmates, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Plymouth, recognizing their contributions to music and culture.
