Dschinghis Khan

Formation

Dschinghis Khan, a German Eurodisco pop band, was formed in Munich in 1979 with the aim of competing in the Eurovision Song Contest. Managed by the renowned producer Ralph Siegel and choreographed by Hannes Winkler, the group quickly gained attention with their eponymous song, which secured fourth place at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Jerusalem, Israel. The name "Dschinghis Khan" is a German spelling of the historical figure Genghis Khan, reflecting the group's eclectic and international makeup.

Breakthrough

The original lineup included Karl-Heinz "Steve" Bender, Wolfgang Heichel, Henriette Heichel, Edina Pop, Louis Hendrik Potgieter, and Leslie Mándoki. Their early singles, particularly "Dschinghis Khan" and "Moskau," became hits, with the English version of "Moskau" topping the charts in Australia for six weeks in 1980. This success was bolstered by its use as theme music for the 1980 Summer Olympics coverage by the Seven Network. However, the group faced challenges, including a ban in the Soviet Union during the 1980s due to accusations of anti-communism.

Legacy

Dschinghis Khan's influence in the Eurodisco genre is notable, with a discography that includes several albums such as "Dschinghis Khan," "Rom," and "Viva." Their music continues to resonate, and they have released numerous compilations and greatest hits albums, solidifying their place in pop music history. The group's unique blend of disco and pop, along with their vibrant performances, has left a lasting impact on the music scene, making them a memorable act from the late 20th century.
