Early Life

Edward Albert Heimberger was born on April 22, 1906, in Rock Island, Illinois, as the eldest of five children. His early life was marked by a move to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he began working as a newspaper boy at the tender age of six. Despite facing challenges during World War I due to his German surname, he thrived in school, joining the drama club at Central High School. After graduating in 1926, he attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in business. However, the stock market crash of 1929 led him to pursue various odd jobs, including that of a trapeze performer and nightclub singer, eventually adopting the stage name Eddie Albert to avoid mispronunciation of his last name.

Career

Albert's career took off when he moved to New York City in 1933, where he co-hosted the radio show "The Honeymooners – Grace and Eddie Show". His talent soon caught the attention of Warner Bros., leading to a film contract. Throughout the 1930s, he starred in several Broadway productions, including "Brother Rat" and "The Boys from Syracuse". Notably, he became one of the first television actors, performing in RCA's early broadcasts and writing the first teleplay for television, "The Love Nest". His versatility as an actor allowed him to transition seamlessly between stage, radio, and television, establishing him as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

Personal Life and Activism

In 1945, Albert married Mexican actress Margo, with whom he had a son, Edward Jr., and adopted a daughter, Maria. The family lived in Pacific Palisades, California, where Albert cultivated organic vegetables, reflecting his commitment to environmental causes. He was an active participant in social and environmental activism, notably helping to establish Earth Day in 1970 and founding the Eddie Albert World Trees Foundation. His dedication to ecological issues earned him recognition as an "ecological Paul Revere" by TV Guide. Albert's legacy extends beyond his acting career, as he was also a passionate advocate for various humanitarian causes until his passing in 2005.
