Early Life

Eddie Cantor was born on January 31, 1892, in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents from Russia. His early life was marked by tragedy, as his mother died shortly after giving birth, and his father’s fate remains unclear. Raised by his grandmother, Cantor adopted the name "Eddie" after meeting his future wife, Ida Tobias, in 1913. They married in 1914 and had five daughters, who often became the subject of his comedic routines.

Career

Cantor was a multifaceted entertainer, known as a comedian, actor, dancer, singer, songwriter, and film producer. He gained fame in the early 20th century, becoming one of the most prominent entertainers of his time. His career milestones include notable albums such as "The Columbia Years: 1922-1940" and "Whoopee!". He was also a pioneer in radio, where he created the "March of Dimes" campaign to raise funds for polio research, inspired by his friendship with President Franklin Roosevelt.

Activism and Legacy

Beyond entertainment, Cantor was deeply involved in philanthropy and activism. He served as the second president of the Screen Actors Guild and was a lifelong Democrat. His contributions to the arts were recognized with several awards, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an Academy Honorary Award. Cantor passed away on October 10, 1964, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved figure in American entertainment history.
