Early Life

Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse was born on December 22, 1883, in Paris, France. Shortly after his birth, he was sent to live with his maternal great-uncle in the village of Le Villars in Burgundy, where he developed a close bond with his grandfather, Claude Cortot. In the late 1880s, Varèse was reunited with his parents, but the family soon moved to Turin, Italy, where he began his formal music education under Giovanni Bolzoni at the Turin Conservatory. Despite his father's insistence on pursuing engineering, Varèse's passion for music led him to leave home for Paris in 1903 to fully dedicate himself to his craft.

Varèse's musical journey took off in Paris, where he studied at the Schola Cantorum and was influenced by notable composers such as Albert Roussel and Charles-Marie Widor.
