Elis Regina Carvalho Costa, known professionally as Elis Regina, was born on March 17, 1945, in Brazil. She emerged as a prominent figure in Brazilian music, particularly known for her contributions to bossa nova, música popular brasileira (MPB), and jazz. Her powerful voice and emotive performances quickly garnered attention, establishing her as a leading artist in the Brazilian music scene.

Career

Elis Regina's career spanned from the mid-1960s until her untimely death in 1982. She released numerous albums that showcased her versatility and passion for music, including notable works such as "Viva a Brotolândia," "Poema de amor," and "Falso Brilhante." Throughout her career, she collaborated with various artists and was known for her dynamic stage presence. Regina was also a mother to two successful singers, Maria Rita and Pedro Mariano, continuing her musical legacy through her children.

Legacy

Elis Regina's impact on music was recognized posthumously when she was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry of Portugal on August 18, 1997. In 2005, a memorial space was established at the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana in Porto Alegre, Brazil, dedicated to her life and work, housing a collection of audiovisuals, CDs, and documents. Her life was also commemorated in the 2016 film "Elis," where she was portrayed by actress Andréia Horta, further solidifying her status as a cultural icon in Brazil.
