Emir Kusturica

Early Life

Emir Kusturica was born on November 24, 1954, in Sarajevo, then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He grew up in a secular Muslim family, the only child of Murat Kusturica, a journalist, and Senka Numankadić, a court secretary. Kusturica's upbringing was marked by a lively spirit, and he often described himself as a borderline delinquent. His early exposure to film came through his father's friendship with director Hajrudin "Šiba" Krvavac, which led to Kusturica's first acting role at the age of seventeen in the film "Walter Defends Sarajevo".

Career

Kusturica graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1978, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in film. He made his feature film debut in 1981 with "Do You Remember Dolly Bell?", which won the Silver Lion for Best First Work at the Venice Film Festival. His subsequent films, including "When Father Was Away on Business" and "Underground", garnered numerous prestigious awards, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In addition to his film work, Kusturica ventured into music, joining the band Zabranjeno Pušenje in 1986 and later forming Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra, which has toured internationally since 1999.

Personal Life

Kusturica holds dual Serbian and French citizenship and is married to Maja Mandić, with whom he has two children. He has been influenced by various artistic figures, including film director Živojin Pavlović and writer Fyodor Dostoyevski. In 2005, he was baptized into the Serbian Orthodox Church, a move that sparked controversy regarding his ethnic identity, as he has often identified as a Yugoslav rather than strictly as a Serb or Bosnian. Kusturica's complex relationship with his heritage continues to shape his artistic vision and personal philosophy.
