Eric Burdon

Early Life

Eric Victor Burdon was born on May 11, 1941, in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, into a working-class family. His father, Matt, hailed from Tyneside, while his mother, René, was originally from Ireland. Burdon's childhood was marked by struggles, including daily asthma attacks due to the polluted environment of Newcastle. He described his early school years as a "dark nightmare," filled with harassment from both peers and teachers. However, a pivotal moment came when a teacher helped him gain admission to Newcastle College of Art and Industrial Design, where he met John Steel, the original drummer for the Animals.

Career

Burdon rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the Animals, a band formed in 1962 that became a significant part of the British Invasion in the United States. Known for their electric blues and rock sound, the Animals produced iconic hits such as "The House of the Rising Sun," "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," and "It's My Life." After the original lineup disbanded, Burdon reformed the group as Eric Burdon and the Animals, continuing to release music and tour. His powerful blues-rock voice and intense stage presence have made him a distinctive figure in music history.

Personal Life

Burdon's personal life has seen its share of ups and downs. He married Angela "Angie" King in 1967, but the marriage ended the following year. He later married Rose Marks, with whom he had a daughter, but they divorced in 1978. In 1999, he married Marianna Proestou, a Greek lawyer who also manages his career. Due to his asthma, Burdon relocated to California in the 1960s and later moved to Athens, Greece, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout his life, he has remained a passionate advocate for music and artistic expression.
