Early Life

Erykah Badu, born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971, in Dallas, Texas, was raised by her mother, actress Kolleen Wright, alongside her siblings, Eevin and Koryan. From a young age, Badu was immersed in the arts, performing at the Dallas Theater Center and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters. By age 14, she was freestyling on a local radio station, and she later changed the spelling of her name to Erykah, believing her original name was a "slave name." After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, she briefly attended Grambling State University before moving to Brooklyn to pursue her music career.

Career

Badu's debut album, "Baduizm," released in 1997, catapulted her to fame, establishing her as a leading figure in the neo soul movement.
