Esma Redžepova

Early Life

Esma Redžepova-Teodosievska was born on August 8, 1943, in Skopje, then part of the Tsardom of Bulgaria, into a poor Xoraxane Muslim Roma family. Her father, Ibrahim, a former circus strongman who lost a leg during a bombing in 1941, worked various jobs while nurturing a love for music that he passed on to his children. Encouraged by her mother, Esma began her musical journey at a young age, joining a local Romani music organization and later her school's folklore group, despite her parents' traditional expectations for her to marry young.

Music Career

Esma's career took off in 1956 when she participated in a school talent contest for Radio Skopje, performing a traditional Romani song. Her victory led to her joining the Ansambl Teodosievski, a prominent folk music ensemble. Over her career, she recorded over 580 songs, including hits in multiple languages, and performed more than 22,000 concerts, a significant portion of which were for charitable causes. Esma's music often reflected themes of love and sorrow, with her song "Chaje Shukarije" becoming an anthem for Roma worldwide. Her artistic style blended traditional Romani and Macedonian music with contemporary influences, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Legacy

Esma Redžepova was not only a celebrated musician but also a humanitarian, earning accolades such as the Bjørnson Prize and the title of National Artist of Macedonia. Her contributions to Romani culture and music earned her the nickname "the Queen of the Gypsies." She passed away on December 11, 2016, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire future generations of musicians and advocates for Romani rights.
