Estelle Harris

Early Life

Estelle Harris, born Estelle Nussbaum on April 22, 1928, in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, was the younger daughter of Polish-Jewish immigrants Isaac and Anna Nussbaum, who owned a candy store and soda shop. The family moved to Tarentum, Pennsylvania, when she was seven. Harris graduated from Tarentum High School, and for many years, her birth date was mistakenly recorded as April 4, 1928, a fact that remained undisclosed until after her passing.

Career

Harris began her artistic journey in amateur productions and dinner theater before transitioning to regional theaters and summer stock across the United States. After raising her children, she found success in television commercials, appearing in 25 national ads, including a memorable one for Handi-Wrap II. Her film career took off in 1977 with the movie "Looking Up," but she became a household name for her role as Estelle Costanza on the iconic sitcom "Seinfeld." Known for her distinctive, shrill voice, she also lent her voice to Mrs. Potato Head in the beloved "Toy Story" franchise, reprising the role in subsequent films. Harris's other notable roles included Muriel in "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" and Mama Gunda in "Tarzan II."

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1952, Estelle married Sy Harris, a window treatment salesman, and they had three children: Eric, Glen, and Taryn. After a long and fulfilling career, she continued to work in voice acting until her final role in "Toy Story 4" (2019). Estelle Harris passed away on April 2, 2022, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and memorable performances that resonated with audiences across generations.
