Farrokh Bulsara, known to the world as Freddie Mercury, was born on September 5, 1946, in Stone Town, Zanzibar, which was then a British protectorate. He was born to Bomi and Jer Bulsara, who were Indian Gujarati Parsis. The family moved to England in the early 1960s, where Mercury would later become a British citizen. His childhood was spent partly in India, where he developed a passion for music, taking piano lessons at the age of seven and forming a school band called the Hectics by age 12.

Career

Freddie Mercury rose to fame as the lead vocalist and pianist of the iconic rock band Queen, which he co-founded in 1970.
