Early Life

Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller was born on May 21, 1904, in New York City, the seventh child in a family of eleven. His mother, Adeline, was a musician, and his father, Edward, was a Baptist lay preacher. Waller began playing the piano at the tender age of six and was inspired by a performance from Ignacy Jan Paderewski at Carnegie Hall. His nickname, "Fats," emerged during his childhood due to his weight, although he primarily used it as a stage name throughout his career. Waller's early exposure to music came from his family's move to Harlem, a vibrant area filled with bars and clubs that featured live music, fueling his artistic aspirations.

Waller's professional journey began in 1921 when he joined the vaudeville group Liza and Her Shufflin' Six, showcasing his talent as an organist. Collaborating with lyricist Andy Razaf, Waller produced some of his most famous songs, including "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose," both of which were later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Personal Life

Waller's personal life was marked by two marriages. He first married Edith Hatch in 1920, but their relationship ended in divorce in 1923 due to financial struggles and Waller's demanding career. He later married Anita Rutherford in 1926, with whom he had two sons. Waller faced challenges as a musician, including financial instability and the pressures of family life, but he remained dedicated to his craft, becoming one of the first African Americans to purchase a home in a racially restrictive neighborhood in Queens, New York.
